Warning: There are Walking Dead spoilers throughout this article.

Rick Grimes fate was left on a cliffhanger following the latest episode of The Walking Dead.

After trying to find an alternative way of stopping a Walker herd heading to camp, the much loved character gets thrown from his horse, leaving him impaled onto a concrete block.

And although he appears to be in a relatively safe spot, the camera zooms out showing Rick surrounded by two zombie herds.

Following the dramatic ending, a trailer for Ricks final episode (which is to air next week) has been released, and his fate doesnt look all too good!

It appears he has managed to pull himself from the block and back onto his horse, in an attempt to continue leading the herd away from camp.

The clip shows a rather pale looking Grimes holding onto his side, as he bleeds out in his heroic attempt to save his people.

Even though it may seem surprising – Rick is just a man, and as the creator Robert Kirkman has previously pointed out, his death is inevitable.

While on what appears to be a self sacrificial journey, the trailer shows a number of flashbacks from Ricks life, and even teases at his pal Shane Walshs return.

Riding on his horse, Rick seems to be heading towards a car that has Shane sat in the drivers seat as though he is waiting for his friend to get there.

The pair can then be seen sat in a car together, with sandwiches laid out on the dashboard, as though they are still on their police duty from a time before the apocalypse.

But the trailer takes a darker turn, as another shot shows Rick stumbling towards the door of the hospital he woke up in back in the first season.

However, there appears to be a slight hitch.

In the first series, the door had dont open dead inside scrawled over the front of it, however the trailer shows inside to be replaced by outside.

Leaving questions surrounding this change unanswered, the trailer then flicks to a shot of Rick walking through hundreds of dead people that have not yet turned into Walkers.

Whether or not the flashbacks are Ricks hallucinations as he slowly bleeds to death is still unknown, but with his exit confirmed it appears his life is flashing before his eyes before that fatal moment.

Walking Dead boss Angela Kang addressed fans fears and assured Ricks exit would be respectful.

The goal this season was just to pay homage to that character — the character that brought us into the show, Kang told Entertainment Weekly.

More: The Walking Dead

Rick Grimes has been somebody that people have loved watching, just loved this characters journey. He is this man who was looking for his family, and found them, and lost many of them, but has fought on and on.

And I think thats meant a lot to people. And we just really wanted to be respectful of that character and send him off in a great way. So that was the charge for us this season.
