Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald has received mixed reviews from the critics.

The early reviews of Eddie Redmayne starrer Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald are out and it looks like it has not wowed the critics. Set in the much loved Harry Potter universe, Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald, is the second out of the five films of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Also starring Johnny Depp as Grindelwald and Jude Law as Dumbledore, the film is expected to Harry Potter loyalists.

The Guardian called it watchable and wrote, “This Fantastic Beasts film is as watchable and entertaining as expected and its an attractive Christmas event, but some of the wonder, novelty and sheer narrative rush of the first film has been mislaid in favour of a more diffuse plot focus, spread out among a bigger ensemble cast.”

Variety implied that the film wasnt quite exciting and wrote, “The film throws plenty of plot twists, loud noises, and multihued magical nebulae at us, but rarely is there much tension, or sense of adventure, or any real longing, just the feeling of watching one chess piece after another being moved into position. The Harry Potter saga also risked growing overloaded with plot machinations in its closing episodes, but that series had on its side the intense investment its audience had developed watching those characters grow up — and in many cases, growing up along with them.”

The Verge wrote that the plot lacked one clear protagonist and wrote, “For the serious fans who this series is meant for, the promise of at least six more hours of Fantastic Beasts action likely means a lot more thrilling beasts, barriers, and beats to explore. Everyone else may find that all the little personal bits of character business and frantic complications arent much of a substitute for a clear and compelling plot with a single meaningful protagonist.”

In its review, IGN wrote, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is another strong entry in J.K. Rowlings Wizarding World saga. Rowling has improved upon the first Fantastic Beasts film by fleshing out her characters in a way thats engaging, though not everybody receives as much attention.”

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald releases on November 16 in India.
