Andrew Lincolns Rick Grimes exited The Walking Dead earlier this week, yet there are still some questions that need answering – namely wtf does A and B mean?

The mysterious labelling has appeared regularly across the shows nine series and is linked to Jardis and her use of the helicopter, having attributed them to several characters, but fans have been left in the dark about its significance.

In recent scenes, Gabriel Stokes introduced the idea that A and B refers to a persons attitude or skills, suggesting that A is a leader and B is a follower, but this might not be completely true as it also could have something to do with walkers or a person being injured.

The episode What Comes After, which marked Ricks departure, revealed him to be an A.

At the time, Anne radioed the helicopter saying: I have a B not an A. I never had an A. Hes hurt, but hes strong. Can you help him? Im trying to save a friend. A friend who saved me. I have something for you now. We have a deal? Do we have a deal?

However Rick hadnt always been a B, having changed from a B the series before wen Anne locked him inside a shipping container marked with a B.

Elsewhere in series nine, Anne is instructed by the helicopter people that she needs to get an A in, but is overheard by Gabriel and the pair fight.

She eventually tells him that she traded people for supplies and asks Gabriel to join her on his quest, but he declines, causing her to say: All the time, I thought you were a B.

Heath is also linked to the lettering, although viewers still dont know his fate.

Showrunner Angela Kang has given a tiny clue into the meaning behind the letters, telling Entertainment Weekly last month: The A and B has something to do with the thing that she was involved in which was human trading, and it was a way to differentiate between classes of people.

Fans are at a complete loss over the mystery and have vented their frustrations on Twitter with one person blasting: I dont understand the As and the Bs on The Walking Dead.

So… do we know what an A and a B are yet? asked another.

Will we ever find the truth?
