Last month, FilmStruck announced that it will shut down on November 29, devastating classic-film fans who had depended on the streaming platform for their Old Hollywood fix. But now—after complaints from high-profile film lovers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Barry Jenkins, Barbra Streisand, Guillermo del Toro, and Leonardo DiCaprio—FilmStrucks parent company, WarnerMedia, has announced a streaming solution that will come into effect next spring.

Specifically, the beloved Criterion Collection—whose titles appeared as part of FilmStruck— will launch as its own freestanding streaming service. A press release circulated Friday offered more details.

The Criterion Channel will be picking up where FilmStruck left off, with thematic programming, regular filmmaker spotlights, and actor retrospectives, featuring major classics and hard-to-find discoveries from Hollywood and around the world, complete with special features like commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, and original documentaries. The Criterion Channel will continue to produce their guest-programmer series, “Adventures in Moviegoing,” which has already featured such cinephile luminaries as Barry Jenkins, Guillermo del Toro, Bill Hader, and Mira Nair. Criterion's monthly 15-minute film school, “Observations on Film Art,” “Tuesdays Short + Feature,” and the Friday double bill will all be back as well.

The Criterion Collections library of films will also be available on WarnerMedias direct-to-consumer platform, which will launch toward the end of 2019. Criterion Collection trumpeted the news on Twitter Friday, directing fans to sign up to become Charter Subscribers. Del Toro seemed to be happy with this solution, telling his followers Friday, “This is the perfect not-missing-a-beat way to address the @FilmStruck debacle. Please share and support. It takes a moment to sign in.”
