Its the golden rule of filming wildlife documentaries: dont intervene when an animal is in danger. Well, the crew filming Dynasties thought screw that during last nights instalment to save a colony of penguins.

David Attenboroughs new series has been a rollercoaster of tough love thus far, from watching David the chimp – who was since found beaten to death – fight for his life when up against his rival Luther, to watching countless baby penguins freeze in the snow.

Although, we know we werent the only ones ROFLing watching two penguins trying to fight.

But in an extraordinarily bold move by the BBC, two cameraman, who were seen in tears last night, couldnt stand by and watch a group of Emperor penguins trapped after a freak accident in nature left them stranded in an icy pit, unable to clamber out.

In turn, Lindsay McCare and Will Lawson dug a small gorge and provided the penguins and their newly hatched chicks an escape route, because how could you not?

Well, David Attenborough has now weighed in and David says its ok then who is anyone else to judge.

Executive producer of Dynasties, Michael Gunton spoke for David, 92, and told the BBC: He thought we did the right thing. He actually said, “somebodys going to ask me if I would have done it, and he said, “yes I would.”

David previously defended leaving a baby elephant to die from dehydration while filming the 2013 series, Africa.

During a press conference, he told crowds: All youre doing is prolonging the death. So you make things infinitely worse. Tragedy is part of life and you have to show it. You cant have sunshine throughout your life.

To have done anything else would only make matters worse and distort the truth.

Dynasties continues Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
