Elsie Fisher has a pretty sweet plan for celebrating her first-ever Golden Globe nomination: “Going on a little bit of a shopping spree, getting some video games and some records, and taking a fat nap.”
On Thursday, the 15-year-old was nominated for best actress in a comedy for her heartwarming performance in Bo BurnhamsEighth Grade. Like most potential nominees, the actress woke up early to watch the nominations livestream alone in her room as they rolled in, starting at a blistering 5:05 a.m. Pacific.
“As soon as it was announced, I could hear my dad, like, yell in the other room Yeah!” she said. Mr. Fisher then ventured out to look for celebratory doughnuts: “Food is the immediate answer in this household.”
As expected, the teens phone quickly began lighting up with messages and well wishes, save from one person in particular. “I think Bo might still be asleep,” she said with a laugh.
Though Fisher cant wait to properly celebrate her win, shes still a teen—and, like most teens, has to go to school. (Though Fisher participates in a homeschooling program, she still has to go to a campus.) On todays docket? “I gotta do a test for math and one for phys. ed,” Fisher said.
The Globes nod is the latest accolade Fisher has received over the course of this awards season, which has seen Eighth Grade walk a steady path toward potential Oscar recognition. Along the way, Fishers been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and won a Gotham Award; at that ceremony, she delivered a wonderfully earnest, hands-over-heart speech. Shes also been charting a delightful sartorial path, wearing crisply tailored suits to every ceremony of note, a streak she plans to continue at the Globes.
“I love the suits,” Fisher said. “My Thom Browne one from the Governors Awards and the A.L.C. [suit] for the Gothams—all the G awards, so we gotta have one for the Globes.”
Before anyone hoists any symbolic meaning onto her affinity for suits, know that Fisher isnt trying to make any declarations about, well, anything. The 15-year-old just has a very defined aesthetic: “I feel like suits are very me,” she said. “I look poppin in em!”
