As far as fans can see, EastEnders has subtly tried to forget about all of the events that took place in Redwater, which included Alfie Moons brain tumour and Kat almost being murdered by her long-lost serial killer son Dermott.

But it turns out that it wasnt just a dream after all as the upcoming Christmas episode will see the events from the now defunct spin-off referenced in the dialogue.

Shane Richie explained to Metro.co.uk: When we came back, there was talk about “Do we back reference the whole Ireland thing?” There were certain people who didnt think we should, and I kind of felt we have to.

It was always going to be one series we were led to believe and then wed come back to EastEnders but course the show was never as big as they thought it was going to be, personally because I think Redwater sent out mixed messages.

But we do talk about certain characters, theres a scene where Kat and Alfie talk about Dermott so those who have watched will see the link there. To not mention it, it just seemed a bit silly, so we do. But we dont harp on about it, because of course at the end of Redwater, Alfie was flatlining, Kat had been eaten by a whale or something, I dont know, whatever happened there!

But there was a lot of time that passed. And then we talk about the history of where Kat and Alfie have been in Spain.

And while the episode involves a lot of Kat and Alfie raking over old ground, a new event sees them facing a shocking future as the revelation that Alfie is the father of Hayleys baby leads to a terrifying and potentially deadly event.

Shane teased: There is such a big shock on Christmas Day. Obviously I cant tell you, but even when I read it I went “Oh, you cant do that, you cant do that, weve tipped it over the edge now.” Its just a real, massive cliffhanger on Christmas Day. I will be so intrigued to see the reaction on social media with shock and how everything plays out after that.

Only on Christmas Day could this happen. Why anyone would want to live in Walford I have no idea. But yeah, Christmas Day is massive and Ive been privileged enough to see some of it.
