Ellen Degeneres might helm one of the most popular talk shows on the planet, but the host has admitted she often toys with the idea of calling it all a day.

The 60-year-old comic sat down with The New York Times to discuss her upcoming Netflix special, Relatable, and revealed she came close to declining an offer to renew her contract on the much-loved talk-show until summer 2020.

The comedian explained that she often talks through the idea with her brother and wife, with fellow comedian Vance urging her to keep the show going while wife Portia de Rossi, who she married in 2008, suggests she could tackle other things.

She gets mad when my brother tells me I cant stop, Ellen said of Portia.

I just think shes such a brilliant actress and stand-up that it doesnt have to be this talk show for her creativity. There are other things she could tackle, Portia added, before insisting: I dont see the end of her show as her career ending.

It comes after Ellen discussed the next phase of her career when Today co-host Hoda Kotb was a guest on her talk show in January.

The comic admitted she didnt know what shes looking forward to, which is why Im going to keep doing this until I figure that out.

Im not looking forward to retiring because I love doing this, she added.

However, in her interview with the The New York Times, the show host – who voiced forgetful fish Dory in the Pixar animated films Finding Nemo and Finding Dory – admitted she would love to star in another movie and play someone unappealing for once.

During the chat, Ellen also opened up about the qualms she has with her super-nice, squeaky-clean TV image and revealed it isnt always a true representation of how she is off-camera.

The talk show is me, but Im also playing a character of a talk-show host. Theres a tiny, tiny bit of difference, she explained.

And she also put to bed *those* rumours claiming shes a diva offstage, labelling them outright lies.

That bugs me… The first day [on set] I said, “The one thing I want is everyone here to be happy and proud of where they work, and if not, dont work here”, she explained.
