The expanded cast for the Disney+ series Star Wars: The Mandalorian has been unveiled by Lucasfilm with some notable new additions: Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Carl Weathers (Predator), Omid Abtahi (American Gods) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man).

The announcement also confirmed previously reported news that the title role would be handled by Pedro Pascal (Narcos) and that Gina Carano (Deadpool) and Nick Nolte (Affliction) would also be on board as co-stars.

“Were having a great time working with this incredibly talented group and excited for everyone to see what were up to,” executive producer Jon Favreau said in the cast announcement, which was posted on the official Star Wars website.

Production is underway on The Mandalorian, which is written and EP by Favreau. Well-known Jedi universe storyteller Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) is directing the inaugural episode and serves as executive producer alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson.

The title of the show is nod to Pascals role as a native of the planet Mandalore, which Star Wars fans know as the homeworld of the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett and Jango Fett.

Favreau, the director of Jungle Book, Iron Man as well as the upcoming reinterpretation of The Lion King, has previously described the show as a gunslinger odyssey and seemed to evoke images of a deep-space tale with Old West tones.

“After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”

The events depicted in the series are set after the events of Return of the Jedi, which concluded with the fiery funeral of Darth Vader on the forest moon of Endor.

Directors lined up to helm early episodes include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok).

Disney+ is expected to launch in late 2019 as a subscription streaming site and major priority of the entertainment giant. The announced content for the service includes Marvel Studios spinoff series and a live-action/CG hybrid remake of the 1955 classic The Lady and the Tramp.
