Halsey has hit back at critics after she performed an emotional performance on The Voice that depicted a same-sex relationship.

The pop star performed her hit single Without Me on the final of the US version of the show, which saw 16-year-old Chevel Shepherd win after being mentored by Kelly Clarkson.

Very proud of the emotional performance i did with @JadeChynoweth on @NBCTheVoice tonight. And also very proud to have pissed off thw homophobic viewers at home who missed the message. Thanks for watching, (sic), tweeted Halsey after the performance, which saw some social media users criticise network NBC for the inappropriate routine.

On Instagram, she told fans how younger me is stoked for having been given the opportunity to dance the routine choreographed.

Shepherd beat out Blake Sheltons acts Kirk Jay and Chris Kroeze, and Jennifer Hudsons act Kennedy Holmes.

It was the second win for Kelly Clarkson, who won in 2017.

The young singer had not been the favourite to win the show, despite powerhouse performances each week of songs from the likes of Loretta Lynn and LeAnn Rimes; she is also known for yodelling.

Ive been listening to country since I was tiny. You can tell the story of the song to people, she told press after her big win.
