Making A Murderer has been one of the Netflix success stories of recent years, with the second series also proving popular when it landed earlier this year.

The story of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey has gripped viewers, but with the second series ending as it did, theres always room for a third helping.

So will the story continue into a third season?

Heres what we know so far.

Will there be a series three of Making A Murderer?

With Averys appeals process continuing, it seems there is every possibility to continue the story in a third season of the show – although Netflix have yet to confirm anything.

There would certainly be scope for another series if lawyer and wrongful convictions expert Kathleen Zellner manages to win a retrial for Avery.

And the makers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have already teased the possibility of more following.

Are Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey still in prison?

Yes, both men are still incarcerated after being given life sentences for the murder of Teresa Halback – with Avery now 56 years old and Dassey turning 29 on 19 October 2018.

Steven was sentenced on 1 June 2007 and given life without parole, whilst Brendan was sentenced on 2 August 2007 with a minimum term of 45 years.

Avery is now being held at Waupun Correctional Institution whilst Dassey is at Columbia Correctional Institution.

Avery has launched a number of appeals for a new trial, but these have all been turned down, the latest of which being denied in September 2018.

Dasseys case has been far more complicated as, in 2016, a federal judge ruled that his confession to the murder had been coerced and ordered his release from prison.

Despite this, the Wisconsin Justice Department blocked the release, waiting for judgement from the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The circuit court upheld the original verdict by a vote of 4-3 and Dassey remains incarcerated.
