JLS star Aston Merrygold says he felt the judges were hard on him when he took part in Strictly Come Dancing.

Aston and his dance partner Janette Manrara were eliminated in week seven in what was probably the biggest upset of the series as the pair had proved to be popular.

What was an even bigger shock was that they were booted out the same weekendRuth Langsford and Anton Du Beke fell over in the last seconds of their Paso Doble.

Aston thinks he crashed out so early on because the judges were inconsistent when it came to their scoring, but he doesnt hold a grudge against head judge Shirley Ballas, who deciding vote ultimately sent him packing.

He also flagged Craig Revel Horwoods low score of four for his final dance, a Viennese Waltz.

The singer said: Ive seen [Shirley] since. She hasnt said anything about it. Listen, thats her vote. If you step back from it and look at it, she does get the deciding vote.

I dont blame her at the end of the day. In her opinion, she was like: “Im voting for Mollie [King] and AJ [Pritchard]”. Thats fine. Bruno [Tonioli] and Darcey [Bussell] voted for me, Craig voted for Mollie as well.

Craig gave me a four. Can he justify that? Not really, I dont think so, personally. Anton and Ruth got a four from him and they fell over in their routine and ended up on the floor.

Was my routine bad enough that it matched someone who had fallen over? There wasnt really consistency there. With respect, maybe think about the score a little bit more. They were hard on me last year.

Even when I watch the show back Im thinking, thats a bit harsh, even from early weeks.

Hes getting another shot at the glitterball in the Strictly Christmas special, taking to the floor with Janette once more.

Meanwhile Revel Horwood has since said that he thinks Aston was robbed.

He said: Well apart from Anne Widdecombe, darling!

But, Aston [Merrygold] because I thought he was rather robbed you know on the show. He just got a dance on that show that didnt really suit him, and he was up against a Ballroom dance.

Craig added: And he is a fantastic dancer and I want to see him dance more!

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special airs Christmas Day at 5.30pm on BBC One
