Thandie Newton, Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan, His Dark Materials author Philip Pullman and Hotel Rwanda star Sophie Okonedo are among the Brits to pick up a prestigious award as part of the New Year Honours List.

The distinguished awards are handed out once a year and recognize the outstanding achievements of 1,148 people across the United Kingdom.

CBEs – Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – have been awarded to Nolan, for services to film, Okonedo, who is set to star as Lady Hatton in the forthcoming Hellboy movie, as well as Channel 4 drama Chimerica, childrens author Julia Donaldson, who created The Gruffalo, while Westworld star Newton has picked up an OBE, as has Downton Abbey star Jim Carter, who said that he was “particularly delighted this honour came in time to share with my mum, Molly, who is 99 and she was thrilled, she lit up at the news, so that was very good”.

Pullman has received knighthood for his on behalf of the Society of Authors and his successful campaign for fairer payment for writers as well as raising money for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire. His book His Dark Materials, which has sold 17M copies, is being adapted into a big-budget TV drama for the BBC and HBO by Bad Wolf and New Line.

Elsewhere, British model Twiggy, real name Lesley Lawson, has been awarded a damehood for her work with animal welfare, Vision Aid Overseas, and in support of breast cancer research, and numerous childrens charities. Twiggy has starred in a number of films and TV series including Ken Russells The Boy Friend and The Blues Brothers.

Finally, Englands soccer heroes Gareth Southgate and Harry Kane have also scored awards. The pair helped the Three Lions reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. Southgate has been handed an OBE and Kane scored an MBE.
