Sunday nights Golden Globes were a typically unpredictable ride—in terms of both winners and spectacle. One highlight? Christian Bales acceptance speech for best actor in a motion picture, musical or comedy, which many viewers found jarring due to the actors Welsh accent (which he often hides for film roles). During his speech, Bale made it a point to thank an unusual source of inspiration: Satan, whom the actor said “[gave] me inspiration for playing this role.” If youre wondering how actual Satanists felt about the shout-out, never fear—they were thrilled.

“To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential,” the Church of Satan tweeted on Sunday night. “As Mr. Bales own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting. Hail Christian! Hail Satan!”

The Church of Satans Twitter account also took a moment to take a stand on a certain superhero, calling Bales caped crusader from Christopher Nolans Dark Knight series “the best Batman ever.” Hail Christian! Hail Batman!

This is not the first time that Satanists have sounded off about pop culture—although it is a happier occasion than the last. In the fall of 2018, the Satanic Temple, a separate activist group from the Church of Satan that was founded in 2012, sued Netflix over Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for allegedly ripping off their statue of the goat deity Baphomet. (The suit was settled last November.) At the time, the Church of Satan released a statement clarifying that it had nothing to do with the lawsuit, and maintained that it had no real issue with the Netflix series. As Magus Peter H. Gilmore wrote in a blog post on the Churchs official site, “Our members are watching these as many are horror fans and, as might be expected, some enjoy them and others find them not to their tastes—mileage varies amongst our folks who care enough to view it. We arent a collective, but a varied cabal of individuals, so to each his own!”

The Satanic Temple does not appear to have expressed an opinion on Bales speech at this time.
