It is no secret that Idris Elba would make the perfect James Bond. A couple of years ago, that realization took the spy-loving world by storm, with Elba fending off so many casting rumors that demurring basically became a second job for him. But the years went on, Daniel Craig remained attached to the 007 franchise, and Elba-as-Bond seemed like a dream forced to live in our collective imagination—and never on the big screen.

Elba, however, has had his fair share of fun with the rumors, now that theyve lessened a bit in intensity. At Sunday nights Golden Globes, the stars aligned for him to make the perfect joke when he found himself in the same room as Craig, who was playing arm candy to wife Rachel Weisz, nominated for The Favourite. (Elba was in attendance to support his daughter, Isan, this years Golden Globe ambassador.) The two posed for a selfie together—the Peoples Bond in one corner, the Current Bond in the other—staring each other down. “Awks…..” Elba wrote at the bottom of the image.

Ah, nice that these two can joke about the Bond Wars after all this time, right? Not so long ago, Craig seemed so intensely ready to wash his hands of the franchise that it was shocking to learn he had one last Bond movie in the works (set to be directed by Cary Fukunaga). Elba, meanwhile, has had to bat against the rumors—and the offensive remarks theyve inspired—for the past few years. Neither will ever truly know peace from this franchise, and yet they can still bond over Bond.

Speaking of people contending with Bond rumors: Richard Madden had quite a night at the Globes as well. The actor picked up a statuette for his turn in Bodyguard, a performance many have characterized as one long audition for Bond. The former Game of Thrones star is currently rumored to be first in line to play 007 once Craig turns over the keys to the Aston Martin—but hes shutting down questions about those rumors every chance he gets. Case in point: at Sunday nights Globes, Madden declared that the Bond whispers are “just rumors” when asked if the casting reports were true.

He also played the rumors down in a November interview. “Everyone just loves the rumor mill on that topic,” he said. “Im just the current one. Therell be a different one next week.” Perhaps he should have found his way to Elba and Craigs table for a little advice on how to deal. Bond, like ball, is life.
