Teacher who had sex with three schoolboys, aged 15 to 16, spared jail

A pervert teacher has avoided a jail sentence despite admitting having sex with three schoolboys aged just 15 and 16.

Heidi Domangue Verett, 34, confessed on March 22 in court that she abused the three boys in her home in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana over the course of two months beginning in November 2016.

Verrett was originally charged with three felony sex crimes. But she was later offered a deal that allowed her to instead plead guilty to three misdemeanor counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

That deal saw her avoid facing time behind bars. It also means she will not have to register as a sex offender – and she will be legally allowed to teach again in two years.

Ultimately, the former substitute teacher was sentenced to six months of suspended jail time, which is essentially a probation period that allows the person convicted to remain out of jail on a judges discretion. She was also ordered to pay a $900 fine and will serve two years of probation following her suspended jail sentence.

It is unclear why she was offered such a lenient plea deal.

Veretts home was reportedly a popular hangout for boys in her neighborhood. She had a 14-year-old son who was friends with the teens that would later be identified as her victims in court. According to the Houma Times, parents in the small Louisiana community felt safe letting their children hang out at Verretts home because she was a teacher.

It wasnt an isolated child. It was multiple children, one parent said at the time of Verretts December 2018 arrest.

She should be labeled as a predator. She should receive jail time and very extensive counseling. Children are children and it doesnt matter if they are male or female. Some people say that if it is an older male teacher messing with a little girl it is different. But it is not. These children are still traumatized and I am worried about the long-term effects.

Police began to investigate Verrett after a 12-year-old boy revealed text messages that he received from her. Although the contained no sexual content, they reportedly were enough to have her removed as a substitute teacher from the school district.

It was later discovered that Verretts home was often filled with a group of youngsters who were friends with Veretts son. The three victims that she allegedly had sex with were friends of that core group of students.
