Star Wars fans attending Celebration in Chicago this weekend had quite a bit of new footage to chew on, between a first teaser for the Skywalker sagas end in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as additional projects like video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and beyond. That said, Disney is still keeping some footage close to the chest, as a first look at live-action Disney+ series The Mandalorian was limited to the room.
It wasnt all cloak and lightsaber, however, as fans were still treated to a smorgasbord of new character details and photos from the hour-long debut. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy kicked off the presentation with an introduction for longtime animation director Dave Filoni (who makes his live-action Star Wars directing debut with the new series) and executive producer Jon Favreau, who recounted an earlier Mandalorian collaboration on Star Wars: The Clone Wars that facilitated their partnership years ago.
The panel also featured appearances by series lead Pedro Pascal, who declined to name his gunslinger character beyond the title moniker, but did offer “Hes got a lot of Clint Eastwood in him.” The series—which debuts on the Disney+ service November 12 and leans heavily on Star Wars western, Sergio Leone-inspired aesthetic—also offered a few new shots of the character beyond what wed originally seen.
The assembled group also brought out MMA fighter Gina Carano to preview her role as “Cara Dune,” described as an “ex-Rebel shock trooper…having some trouble reintegrating myself into society.” Favreau clarified the series will take place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, so as to chronicle “the idea of that world after Return of the Jedi, and what would happen, and the type of characters that would survive, and what it was like before the New Republic took over.”
Amid other behind-the-scenes photos previewed in the panel, Lucasfilm also released a first look at Rocky alum Carl Weathers “Greef Karga,” a “head of this guild of bounty hunters” who hires Pascals character to retrieve a mysterious quarry.
