HBOs Euphoria landed earlier this month and has already been at the centre of much controversy after close to 30 full-frontal penises made it into an episode.

The pilot saw Eric Danes character Cal Jacobs commit statutory rape with a 17-year-old trans girl and now the Greys Anatomy star has revealed just how the upsetting scenes were filmed.

Similar to the likes of Netflixs Sex Education, the series had intimacy expert Amanda Blumenthal on set at all times to guide the cast and make sure everyone was comfortable.

Those scenes are very difficult to shoot. It helps to have one voice in your ear, Eric told Entertainment Weekly.

One voice that you can express your feelings to, and somebody that is an advocate for the actors.

Continuing to the publication, he added: It just simplifies a lot of things and makes for a safe and comfortable environment while shooting something that is fairly uncomfortable to shoot.

And certainly, the stuff that we did in the pilot is no exception. Its a pretty intense scene.

In the divisive Eurphoria episode one scene, viewers were confronted with an erect penis as well as full-frontal nudity.

Eric revealed that he made use of prosthetics for the shots, however made it clear that he would happily go without if directors were looking for a more authentic cut.

He added: At the end of the day, because of the context, we decided that the prosthetic was the way to go, and we came to that decision as a group.

Euphoria is available to stream on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
