Its not easy being George R.R. Martin. First came A Song of Ice and Fire fans hounding the author to release his next book, followed now by the uproar ignited around the final season of Game of Thrones—something the outspoken author had little to do with. Martin—who himself maintains an active internet presence—may now have had enough, telling Leonard Maltin “The internet is toxic in a way that the old comic fandom and the science-fiction fandom was not.”
Martin shared his thoughts on Maltins podcast, noting that his own upbringing around genre fans proved far more amiable than todays internet-driven ire. “The internet has taken [fanzine culture] up several orders of magnitude," the author stated of fans modern ability to connect with creators. “You can tweet and Facebook, but I don't know if it's an improvement. . . . The Internet is toxic in a way that the old fanzine culture and fandoms — comics fans, science fiction fans in those days – was not. There were disagreements. There were feuds, but nothing like the madness that you see on the internet.”
As for Game of Thrones itself, Martin naturally threw his support behind the beleaguered HBO adaptation and its myriad talent, without directly commenting on the episodes that made up its controversial final season themselves.
