Crank up the Foo Fighters and start balancing your beer cans: Jonny Moxon is headed back to Texas. A new iteration of 1999 teen football classic Varsity Blues is in the works from the writer of Stuber, and will debut on the media technology platform Quibi.
The series will be written by Stuber scribe Tripper Clancy, directed by Anne Fletcher and executive produced by the original films Mike Tollin and Tova Laiter. Said Tollin of the project, “For all those who cheered Mox's refrain, I don't want your life, as well as all those who never heard of the West Canaan Coyotes, we're thrilled to bring Varsity Blues to Quibi and into the 21st century!”
You probably remember the 1999 iteration, which starred James Van Der Beek sawing his way through a Texas accent, a pre-Fast and Furious Paul Walker, featured memorable turns for Jon Voight and Ali Larter, and would go on to inspire the name of one of the more colorful college scandals of recent memory. “But what in the world is Quibi,” you may ask? Its short for “quick bites,” and is described as “the first entertainment platform built for easy, on-the-go mobile viewing, allowing todays leading studios and creative talent to tell original stories in an entirely new way.”
