Coronation Street star Shelley King has revealed how long the coercive control storyline will pan out for in the soap, while teasing its dark future.

The 63-year-old actress plays Yasmeen Nazir in the ITV soap, who has slowly become embroiled in a mental abuse storyline with partner Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew).

Speaking about the storyline on This Morning to hosts Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, Shelley confirmed the storyline will last for at least another year in order to do justice to the truth of the subject.

Asked if she feels responsibility to do the storyline justice, Shelley said: I think its very important. I think soaps and in particular Coronation Street historically has explored many controversial issues because we have a duty of care to the public. Its in our homes.

I think Ian and I have a great responsibility, and Ian the producer, we have a responsibility to talk to people and to create a believable and understandable and truth-based storyline and thats what were doing.

The good thing is we cant be scared of being unpopular as actors or anything like that. Because we come into the home, Barty is the nicest man, we get on so well, we have the humour of a 14-year-old boy and well not give it back.

And we have to trust each other because this story is going to get darker and darker and darker, and truthfully darker based on real stories the script writers have heard and that we have heard.

So if we didnt trust each other, we would not be telling the story in an adequate idea. What you see will become brutal and not physically brutal, but mentally brutal which is even worse in a way.

She added: And its a long term [storyline] and thats the good thing about it. Itll go on for about a year in little bits.
