The BBC received over 1,200 complaints after it aired a same-sex wedding on show Songs Of Praise.

In the episode, Jamie, 27, and Ian McDowell-Wallace, 39, married at the Rutherglen United Reformed Church in Glasgow, marking the first time a gay wedding has aired on the show since it began in 1961.

The United Reformed Church Christian denomination allowed same-sex weddings to take place in its churches from 2016. Same-sex marriage is currently banned in the Church Of England and the Church in Wales.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, a BBC spokesperson said: Songs Of Praise tells the stories of Christians across all denominations in the UK and in doing so, aims to reflect the balance of opinions on different issues.

Three years ago the United Reformed Church decided to permit each of its congregations across the country to decide whether to allow same sex marriages to take place.

In an episode about Faith & Marriage, which aired on 18th August, we featured the wedding of James and Ian, who got married in Rutherglen in Glasgow, to find out what it meant to them as Christians, to be able to take their vows in church.
