Excitement for the new series of The Crown is at an all time high, with fans intrigued to see how Olivia Colman will do as Queen Elizabeth II as she takes over from Claire Foy.

However, eagle-eyed viewers are sure to notice one pretty noticeable difference between the Peep Show actress and her predecessor: her eye colour.

Speaking to The Guardian, director Ben Caron revealed the extreme lengths the crew went to try and cover Olivias naturally dark brown eyes so as to look in line with Claire (and the Queens) baby blues.

Initially putting the Peep Show actress in light blue lenses, the move removed any sense of connection from Olivias performance, with the Bafta-nominated director saying it felt like she was acting behind a mask.

It was as if we had taken all of her acting ability and put it in a safe and locked it away, Ben added.

Definitely not what you want when you get an actress whos won actual Oscars playing royalty onto your show.

Not giving up, the post-production team tried using CGI to make Olivias eyes blue, which still failed to do the trick.

It didnt feel like her, Ben continued. CGI-ing her eyes seemed to diminish what she was doing.

So if Her Maj looks a little different when the new series drops on Netflix on Friday 17 November, you know why.

With a whole new cast including Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter taking over for The Crown series three, the latest exciting addition to the cast is Gillian Anderson, who will take on the role of controversial PM Margaret Thatcher.

More: Olivia Colman

The 51-year-old actress, who has most recently starred as relationship therapist Jean Milburn in Netflixs Sex Education, said of working on the period drama in its fourth series: I am so excited to be joining the cast and crew of The Crown and to have the opportunity to portray such a complicated and controversial woman.

Thatcher was undoubtedly formidable but I am relishing exploring beneath the surface and, dare I say, falling in love with the icon who, whether loved or despised, defined an era.
