Forced to stop eating onions due to India export ban: Hasina
NEW DELHI: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on four-day visit to India, sent out a clear message about her unhappiness over Indias decision to ban the export of onions, which is hurting the neighbouring country.
“There is a problem… you are not sending onions, so I am eating [food] without onions these days… I have asked my cook to prepare dishes without onions,” she told TOI in jest during an interaction at a reception for her at the Bangladesh high commission on Thursday.
India has banned the export of onions in the wake of skyrocketing prices of the staple in the domestic market as the extended monsoon delayed this years harvest.
Hasina repeated the comment in the presence of commerce minister Piyush Goyal and others on Friday at the India-Bangladesh business forum, held on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, where she was pitching her country as a fast-growing economy and attractive business destination.
She broke off to ask the Indian government why the ban was abrupt and her government was not notified in advance about it. Hasina is set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bilateral talks here on Saturday.
