JAMMU: Sixteen people, including three children and five women, died and one person was critically injured after their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the hilly district of Doda in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.
An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons behind the tragic mishap.
The multi-utility vehicle — on its way from Doda to Mangota Marmat — was travelling on the Batote-Kishtwar national highway with 17 onboard. Sometime after 3pm, about 7km from Marmat and a few kilometres short of Khilani, the driver may have lost control of the vehicle near Panchari nallah and it “skidded off the road and rolled down into a gorge,” said Doda SSP Mumtaz Ahmad.
Twelve people died on the spot and five injured were taken to the district hospital, where four died during treatment. The only injured person, identified as Tanveer Ahmed, is in a critical condition and has been shifted to the Jammu Government Medical College Hospital.
Soon after receiving information about the mishap, police and locals launched a massive rescue operation and senior police and civil administration officials also rushed to the spot.
