NEW DELHI: Congresss Jairam Ramesh and Trinamools Mahua Moitra on Friday joined NGOs and advocates in filing PILs challenging the constitutional validity of amendments to the Citizenship Act within hours of the President giving assent to the changes.
NGOs who moved the SC on Friday were Mohammad Shoaib-led Rihai Manch and Citizens Against Hate, which calls itself “a collective of individuals and groups committed to a secular, democratic, caring India”.
Erstwhile king of Tripura K B K Deb Barman is also likely to file a PIL challenging the amendments.
Moitras petition was mentioned before a bench headed by CJI S A Bobde for urgent hearing but the CJI told the counsel to make the request before the SC registrar. Rameshs petition, settled by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Devadatt Kamat, contained the gist of grievances made by petitioners against the amendments.
