Amazons Transparent Will Finally Return—As A Musical

Jill Soloway has been doing the press circuit for their new book, She Wants It: Desire, Power and Toppling the Patriarchy—and delving into the saga behind their hit Amazon show Transparent, which went through the wringer last year when star Jeffrey Tambor was accused of sexual misconduct by his former assistant, a makeup artist, and Transparent co-star Trace Lysette, one of the transgender actors on the show.
Though Tambor denied the allegations, he ultimately resigned from Transparent last November, saying, “Given the politicized atmosphere that seems to have afflicted our set, I dont see how I can return to Transparent.” The future of the show—about trans woman Maura Pfefferman (played by Tambor) and her family, and based on Soloways own family—has been up in the air ever since.
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke has said that Transparents fifth and final season could take the form of a full season, a movie or a limited special. Now, in a new profile from the New York Times, Soloway says that the show will live on as Transparent: The Musical which Soloway wrote with their sister, Faith.
The musical will focus on Judith Lights Shelly Pfefferman and her many neuroses, and should hit Amazon next fall. Its already been performed a few times around New York. Soloway describes it as a mishmash of other musical projects: “Jesus Christ Superstar mixed with La La Land mixed with Flight of the Conchords, with something more Jewish thrown in. A little Yentl.”
Amazon and Soloway have no intention of recasting Tambors Maura. But if youve been missing the neurotic adventures of the Pfefferman clan—Josh, Ali, Sarah and matriarch Shelly—youll be seeing them again soon.
