Rick Grimes may be abandoning The Walking Dead in a matter of days, but the Alexandrian hero looks like hell be leaving his mark in a big way.
The latest instalment of season nine, Warning Signs, seemed to line up one huge storyline for the sheriff before his sudden departure – which has now been confirmed for two weeks time – as Rick proposed raising a child to girlfriend, and all around queen, Michonne.
After losing his eldest son, Carl, in the most harrowing moment from The Walking Dead thus far, and with baby Judith now toddler Judith – even if creator Robert Kirkman wanted to have her killed off too – The Grimes name could well live on past episode five.
It arose out of conversations we were having in the writers room about what are the ways in which theyre thinking about the future, showrunner Angela Kang told Hollywood Reporter. A thing thats very true in human history is there tend to be baby booms after war.
People feel theyve survived something, and they want to celebrate and rebuild. This felt very true to us.

This is a couple thats been through so much together, Kang added. Were exploring through Carol (Melissa McBride) how Ezekiel (Khary Payton) proposed marriage to her.
Do Rick and Michonne do the same thing, or does the way they signal their commitment to each other as a couple look a little bit different? We wanted to see how different people would approach this situation, and this felt like it was true to them.
Theyve been able to raise Judith, and shes happy and healthy and safe in a world in which Lori once stated theres no way a baby could survive the apocalypse.

Its a signal as to where they believe they are in the progress of things.
The twist looks almost certain – just to make Ricks exit even more harrowing for fans when Michonne will likely find out shes with child after the events of season nine.
