The NAACP Image Awards were held Saturday evening, with Black Panther picking up several awards.
The star-studded ceremony took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood with Black-ish actor Anthony Anderson hosting the ceremony, which was televised live on TV One.
During the broadcast, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) was honored with the NAACP Chairmans Award, and brought the crowd to its feet with her impassioned speech about serving the nation.
“After a long career journey, tonight I stand before you as the first woman and the first African-American to chair the powerful U.S. House Financial Services Committee,” she said. Yes, I got the gavel and Im not afraid to use it.”
Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter received the Presidents Award for distinguished public service. After taking a shot at President Donald Trump, the hip-hop mogul dedicated his award to the “beautiful women” in his life.
“I grew up believing I could do anything, that I could accomplish anything because of those strong women in my house,” he said.
There were also several humorous moments, including when Chris Rock mocked embattled Empire actor Jussie Smollett, who recently saw the 16 felony disorderly conduct counts against him dropped by Chicago prosecutors.
“What a waste of light skin,” Rock quipped. “You know what I could do with that light skin… my career would be out of here. I would be running Hollywood.”
This is the 50th year the Image Awards have been held.
