Piers Morgan gives update on Kate Garraway’s sick husband

Piers Morgan and Kate Garraway are good friends, and work on Good Morning Britain together. The outspoken GMB host has now given an update on how the 53-year-old’s husband Derek Draper is, saying he remains in hospital.

The 53-year-old said the presenter’s spouse of 15 years is still “fighting for his life as we speak”.

During an interview with Kevin O’Sullivan on talkRADIO, the father-of-four revealed the personal impact coronavirus has had.

Piers remarked who he has lost due to the pandemic, while also referencing Derek, 52.

He confirmed Kate’s other half was still unwell, seven weeks after being rushed to ICU with a severe case of COVID-19.

Derek has been battling it since March 30, with none of his family being allowed to visit him because of strict rules to stop the spread.

Piers said in the radio chat: “I have a cousin whose father died of coronavirus.

“Had another friend of mine – a TV producer who I’ve worked on foreign assignments – whose mum died in a care home last week.”

The star continued: “I’ve had Kate Garraway, who’s the Good Morning Britain co-presenter of mine – her husband Derek Draper is fighting for his life as we speak and has been for many weeks in an ICU unit.

“So I’ve been personally affected by this, by the sheer volume of friends of mine and family who have been directly impacted in the most horrific manner.”

“So yeah, I do feel a personal attachment to this story,” he added. “But I think most people, if they have a conscience, should.”

Piers has made his feelings known about the government’s handling of the crisis, both on GMB and on Twitter.

He tweeted his 7.5 million followers earlier today: “Memo to trolls: the more you try to silence me with foul-mouthed abuse, death threats & petitions for me to be fired, the louder & harder I will challenge the Govt over its handling of this crisis. Lives depend on it.”

Meanwhile, it comes just days after Kate Garraway gave an update on Derek in view of her own 749,000 Instagram followers.

On Thursday, she shared a video of their son, Billy, with his latest creation.

The couple also share a daughter, Darcey, 14, after she walked down the aisle for a second time in 2005.

She captioned her upload: “So our #nhsclap was a little different tonight. We still clapped & cheered as much as ever but I couldnt film on my phone as had Derek on FaceTime throughout!

“Of course we cant KNOW but I believe he can hear us & thought at least the incredible @nhs teams looking after him would hear a fraction of our gratitude.”

She then referenced the clip: “Billy made this for his Dads carers to show how much he means to our family & to say thank you for fighting to bring him back to us.

“I am hoping they will let Derek have it by his bed. But even if they cant THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts – you are superheroes . Love to all in these terrible times – the separation from loved ones whatever the reason is so tough.”
