Christmas is done and dusted and the New Year is just days away, and with it comes plenty of new TV shows to watch on the long, dark, January nights.
BBC are kicking 2018 off in style with a slick gangster drama and writer Kay Mellor is back with what is sure to be another uplifting drama with memorable female characters at its core.
Over on Channel 4 there’s a belting Irish comedy set in the 90s and Dawn French is back sizzling and smouldering on Sky One.
Mark these dates in your diaries, folks.
McMafia
James Norton plays Alex Godman, the English-raised son of Russian exiles with a mafia history that threatens to rear its ugly head.
We’ve seen the first episode and we cannot praise it highly enough. If you liked The Night Manager, you’ll love this.
Airs New Year’s Day, 9pm, BBC One
Grandpa’s Great Escape
David Walliams’ heart-warming, best-selling book comes to the small screen. It tells the story of Grandpa, a World War II flying ace, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s and is moved to Twilight Towers, an old people’s home run by the crafty Miss Dandy, who is using Twilight Towers for her own dastardly ends.
Airs New Year’s Day, 6.55pm, BBC One
Delicious series 2
Dawn French and Emilia Fox return to this saucy, foodie drama about warring hoteliers Gina and Sam, who are caught up in a tangled web of sex, lies and betrayal. French raised a few eyebrows with her sex scene last series – can she top it?
Airs 5 January, 9pm, Sky One
Marcella series 2
Girlfriends
Zoe Wanamaker, Phyllis Logan and Miranda Richardson star in this new drama from writer Kay Mellor.
It’s a story of three friends, Linda, Sue and Gail, as they struggle to deal with the changes that come with being a woman of a certain age. The trio are reunited after the death of Linda’s husband, but each bring their own baggage with them.
Airs 3 January, 9pm, ITV
Hunted
Tense factual thriller Hunted returns for six more episodes in the New Year as a dedicated team of investigators, led by Scotland Yard detective, Chief Peter Bleksley, pursue fugitives across the UK.
The stakes are seriously high this time, as the fugitives could win a share of £100,000 if they manage to evade the hunters for 25 days.
Airs 4 January, 9pm, Channel 4
Next Of Kin
A highly intelligent GP, played by Archie Panjabi (who should be in way more things), is left grief-stricken when her brother is murdered while working overseas. His death brings all sorts of skeletons out of her family’s closet and she’s drawn into a tangle of conspiracy and betrayal.
Airs 8 January, 9pm, ITV
Trollied
The seventh series of the supermarket-set comedy continues with the third episode, bringing with it some exciting new characters. Look out for Hollyoaks and Strictly Come Dancing star Danny Mac whipping his top off in the aisles.
Airs 16 January at 10pm, Sky One followed by episode four on 23 January, 10pm, Sky One
Ex On The Beach: Body SOS
Vicky Pattison hosts this brand new show helping 16 people undergo a fitness transformation with the help of a crack team of personal trainers. Despite the Ex On The Beach kicker, this should be an uplifting watch with life-changing results for the contestants.
Airs 17 January at 8pm, MTV
Derry Girls
Set in 1990s Derry during The Troubles, the comedy follows 16-year-old Erin who longs to better herself – if only her madcap family and friends would stop holding her back.
Airs 4 January, 10pm, Channel 4
