On the heels of the series Season 2 premiere, HBO has renewed Emmy-winning Westworld for a third season.

“Its been an extraordinary pleasure to work with the exceptionally talented Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as their gifted cast and crew,” said Casey Bloys, President HBO Programming.. “From the inspired storytelling to the incredible visuals, we are so excited to see where the next chapter will take us.”

Created for television by Nolan and Joy, based on the film written by Michael Crichton, Westworld is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the birth of a new form of life on Earth. The show debuted on HBO in October 2016 to become the networks most-watched freshman series ever. It returned for its ten-episode second season Sunday, April 22. In Season 2, the androids have revolted against their human creators.

Westworld has been a big success for HBO. Its second season premiered with 2.1 million viewers in its 9 PM timeslot — up 5% from the series linear debut in fall 2016. Compared with the Season 1 average, the Season 2 debut was up 13%. In its first season, the series garnered 22 Emmy nominations and won five.

The second season is executive produced by J.J. Abrams, Richard J. Lewis, Roberto Patino, Athena Wickham and Ben Stephenson. Kilter Films and Bad Robot Productions produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.
