Sacha Baron Cohen has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV series Musical or Comedy for the coterie of characters he played in the satirical series Who Is America? While some will read into this that his inclusion in the series and not limited series category means that there might be an encore for his groundbreaking summer Showtime series, Baron Cohen at this point only wanted to thank the people who unwittingly helped him get there.

“I appreciate the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing me, which luckily is something that none of the guests on the show did,” he said. “This is such a special honour for me as the HFPA are always among the first to really appreciate my ever evolving humour. I am humbled to be recognised among such a wonderful group of nominees, all of whom I admire. This show was a labour of love for over two years. It is a shame they overlooked the amazing performances by the rest of the cast, particularly Dick Cheney and Roy Moore. Meanwhile Ms Palin, despite being cut from the show, I hope you will accept my invitation to be my date for the ceremony.”

Palin had accused Cohen of duping her that he was a handicapped U.S. military veteran during an interview, which in the end did not air on Cohens show. Palin had taken to Facebook claiming that she was among “a long list of American public personalities who have fallen victim to the evil, exploitative, sick humor of the British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, enabled and sponsored by CBS/Showtime.” In response to Palins claims, Showtime issued a statement that “Baron Cohen never presented himself as a veteran of the U.S. military to former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin during the booking process or during the filming of her interview, and contrary to her claims he did not appear in a wheelchair. In both the interview with Governor Palin and the interview with Senator Sanders, he did not wear military apparel of any kind.” Cohen was actually in the guise of his character Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr., Ph.D., a conspiracy theorist (in the vein of Alex Jones) who uses a motor scooter to conserve his energy.
Prior to the shows finale, Showtime president of programming Gary Levine hinted at TCA that the segment may not make the final cut. Baron Cohen “is always refining” the final product because he “has a very high bar” said Levine.
