Mario Melchiot understands Antonio Conte's frustrations, insisting Chelsea's squad is not strong enough to successfully juggle their Premier League and Champions League commitments.

Conte was critical of his club bosses in the summer after failing to land some of his top transfer targets and has continually bemoaned the Blues' lack of depth.

Having won the title last season, the Italian admitted repeating that feat is unlikely after last weekend's defeat to Crystal Palace left his side nine points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

And, after a 3-3 draw with Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday night made it three games without a win for Chelsea, Melchiot admits he is 'worried' for his former club.

"At the beginning of the season Conte made it clear he needed more players, more support," said the ex-Netherlands international, speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

"Last season the focus was only on the league. Now the Champions League is involved, so you need more players to be able to come off the bench and deliver even better than the ones playing already.

"You want to pull someone off the bench who can add some more value to the team and, at this moment, I don't know if they have that capability. Morata is a great striker, but where is the competition? They don't believe in Batshuayi.

"The weight is too much on the 11 they have and maybe two or three off the bench and that is it. That is why Conte has been complaining. He needs more players, players that are capable of making a difference to the team.

"It isn't looking so well at the moment. There is a worry at Chelsea right now, I think."
