Unspeakable character Luke Treadaway said he was glad to find out that his character was innocent.

Luke played Danny in the Channel 4 drama, a man accused of sexually abusing his older girlfriend Jo’s 11-year-old daughter.

The end of the episode revealed that Jo’s ex-husband had been the one behind the horrific allegations, as he was bitter over their split.

At a press screening of the film, Luke told Metro.co.uk he was ‘relieved’ to learn Danny was falsely accused.

He said: ‘I knew he hadn’t done it when I finished reading the script, but I spent the whole time I read the script thinking, “I’m gonna get to the end and he’s gonna have done it.”

‘I was genuinely nailed on when I was reading it that Danny was guilty, but when I Danny hadn’t done it I was sort of relieved.

‘That’s why I thought the script was so good, because when I read it I didn’t know, without there being too many red herrings thrown in. It was very subtly done. It didn’t try to allude to him being anything, it was all what was going on in Jo’s mind really.’

Writer and director David Nath added: ‘In the making of this we wanted to make sure we weren’t getting led down a path where we made it so that Danny gave heavy handed clues that he was guilty. We had a lot of conversations about it. You’ve just got to play it absolutely straight.’

Treadaway continued: ‘Without there being moments of trying to linger on anything, it had been done really subtly. I didn’t want to come in and make a big scene and try and lead people down a certain route, twiddling my moustache.’
