Scotsman Charlie Adam believes the decision to rule Malky Mackay out of a permanent role as Scotland manager is ridiculous.

The former Cardiff City boss oversaw the national side’s 1-0 defeat to the Netherlands on Thursday night in his first game as caretaker manager.

Mackay, the SFA performance director, was placed in charge of the team following Gordon Strachan's departure in October.

But, in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan confirmed on Thursday that the interim boss is NOT in the running to take over on a full-time basis.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports breakfast, Adam voiced his concern.

He said: “There must be enquiries into what’s going on above the manager at the moment.

“If he’s put in charge but not considered I just think it’s ludicrous. Something needs to be done about it.

“This is what happens when you’ve got non-football people in charge. What happens if they beat Holland 4-0 last night?”

The 31-year-old also gave his opinion on who the next man in charge might be.

He said: “It’s a big decision now for the FA to see who they go for.

“I think they may be waiting to see what happens with Northern Ireland and Michael O’Neill. That’s probably who it could be.”

On his own future, the Stoke City midfielder was heavily suggestive of a move away from the bet365 Stadium in January.

He added: “I am frustrated. I want to play and January might be an opportunity for me to go and play somewhere.

“I don’t know what the club are thinking. I’ll let them make the decision and respect what they say.”
