Donald Trump wants the three UCLA basketball players he liberated from China to know what a hero he is.

The president said he sought help from Chinese president Xi Jinping in freeing LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill after they were accused of shoplifting.

Trump tweeted: ‘Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump? They were headed for ten years in jail!’

The players landed in Los Angeles on Tuesday after missing their return flight home last week.

‘What they did was unfortunate,’ Trump had previously told reporters.

He praised Xi’s response as ‘terrific’ after he asked for their release during his Asia visit.

The University of California basketball players had gone out to Hangzhou to play one of their games.

They refused to talk to reporters after they’d landed.
