Critically acclaimed British comedy Toast Of London, which has featured guest appearances from A-listers including Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and Jude Law, is returning for a new series, according to creator and star Matt Berry.
It had been thought that series three, which airs on Channel 4 in the UK and Netflix in the U.S, was likely to be the last season of the esoteric comedy. However, Berry, speaking on BBC Radio 6 Music, confirmed that he was writing more episodes of the show although he refused to be drawn on a timeline for the new series. It’s believed that Berry could take his British actor to the U.S for the fourth series.
Toast Of London, which is written by Berry and Father Ted writer Arthur Matthews and directed by Brass Eye director Michael Cumming, stars Berry as Steven Toast, an eccentric, middle aged actor who spends more time dealing with his problems off stage than performing on it.
The half-hour comedy, which is produced by All3Media’s Objective Media, has run for three, six-part series and has included a raft of guest stars including Hamm, Law, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, Morgana Robinson, Vic Reeves, Martin Freeman and Sam Mendes.
Berry also briefly lifted the lid on his next project; a period crime comedy featuring a group of Victorian detectives. The show, which is produced by Objective for C4, is written by Veep writers and supervising producers Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley. A pilot featured Berry, Cucumber’s Freddie Fox and Chewing Gum’s Susan Wokoma “fighting notorious criminals in London in the 1880s”. Berry said they are now just waiting for the “money men” to make a final decision.
Berry, who is represented by CAA and Troika Talent, is starring in Park Pictures’ Jim Hosking-directed comedy feature An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn and will voice the forthcoming Moomins TV adaptation and Matt Groening’s Netflix animation Disenchantment.
