Mel Gibson admitted on Graham Norton that even he is surprised by his comeback – but fans aren’t just surprised, they’re pretty unhappy about it, too.

During Gibson’s appearance on the late night BBC talk show with the cast of Daddy’s Home 2, the angry tweets were coming in thick and fast.

As he sat alongside co-stars Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg and John Lithgow, he chatted with Graham about the new film and admitted that he’s surprised at his comeback.

‘I am surprised as I have been digging a ditch for the past 10 years,’ explained the star, who was nominated for an Oscar for Hacksaw Ridge earlier this year.

But viewers were not going to go easy on the disgraced actor – there was no sympathy offered on the Twittersphere:

Mel Gibson – just see what he's said about Jewish people, gay people and his domestic relationship. Disgusting – why is he on @grahnort , the foul abusive arsehole.

What the hell @BBCOne@TheGNShow how is Mel Gibson being given the opportunity to appear on your show? Disgusting lack of a moral backbone there.

The 61-year-old carried on to host Graham: ‘Quite frankly, it’s been a lot of hard work personally and professionally, but the work goes on as I think it does for most of us.’

Should work go on for you professionally though, Mel?

The Oscar-winning actor and director fell from favour after a string of incidents which saw him accused of racist and anti-Semitic outbursts, as well as an alleged domestic violence incident with his then partner Oksana Grigorieva.

He ran into trouble over language he used in 2010 when he was recorded on the phone to Grigrorieva in regards to what she was wearing that night.

‘You’re an embarrassment to me, you look like a f***ing pig in heat, and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers, it will be your fault,’ he was heard telling her.

In 2011, Grigrorieva accused him of knocking two of her teeth out and physically attacking her while pregnant. The actor was found guilty of battery but had his conviction wiped after completing a three-year probation.
