CBS Developing Law School Comedy ‘Class Action’ From Jay & Dr. Phil McGraw

CBS has put in development multi-camera law school comedyClass Action, from Jay McGraw and Dr. Phil McGraw’s Stage 29 Productions, former Modern Family executive producer Dan O’Shannon, John Cochran (The Millers) and CBS Television Studios.

Written by O’Shannon and Cochran, Class Action is based on Jay McGraw’s real-life experiences at a Texas University. A law student looking for the easy way out gets more than he bargained for when he finds himself in a class where he and an eclectic group of fellow law students are required to argue actual cases in court.

O’Shannon executive produces with Stage 29 Productions’ Jay McGraw and Phil McGraw and Julia Eisenman. Cochran is co-executive producer. CBS TV Studios, where O’Shannon and Stage 29 Productions are under deals, co-produces with Stage 29.

Class Action marks Stage 29’s second sale to CBS this development cycle. The company also has crime drama The Source written by Amanda Green (Lethal Weapon, The Mysteries of Laura).

The McGraws are executive producers on CBS/CBS Studios’ drama series Bull, which is based on Dr. Phil McGraw’s real-life experiences, now in its second season. The father-and-son duo also have a long-standing relationship with CBS on the syndication side. CBS Television Distribution handles Phil McGraw’s long-running Dr. Phil, TV’s No. 1 daytime talk show, now in its 16th season, as well as the Stage 29-produced The Doctors, currently in its 10th season, and freshman DailyMailTV.

O’Shannon served as writer-executive producer on Modern Family from 2009-2014 when he left for an overall deal at CBS TV Studios. He most recently wrote for The Odd Couple and Superior Donuts as part of that deal.

Cochran landed his first TV comedy writer job on CBS series The Millers after winning Survivor: Caramoan. He later teamed with The Millers creator Greg Garcia on multi-camera comedy Bob’s Your Uncle which sold to CBS. He most recently wrote for Kevin Can Wait.

Stage 29 Productions is repped by UTA and attorneys Joseph Horacek and Manatt Phelps. O’Shannon is repped by CAA and attorney Jamie Mandelbaum. Cochran is repped by CAA.
