Ratings for The X Factor final have slumped to an all-time low after the first part of this year’s climactic showdown failed to knock Strictly Come Dancing from its perch.

The two shows went head-to-head on Saturday night, with both the ITV show and Strictly’s musicals special kicking off at 7.05pm and running together for just over an hour until the latter finished at 8.10pm.

But according to overnight figures The X Factor was unable to steal much of Strictly’s thunder, pulling in an average of just 4.4m viewers compared to Strictly’s audience of 9.9m.

In fairness, the show did gain 100,000 more viewers than last weekend’s semi-final – which also had an overlap of 40 minutes with Strictly.

And it doesn’t take into account those watching the show on ITV+1 or on catch-up services – which may bump the audience up somewhat.

However the average on-the-night viewing figure is still 1.1m down on the Saturday night of the 2016 final – which in itself, was the least-watched X Factor final in series history.
