An Australian MP finally proposed to his boyfriend during a same-sex marriage debate in parliament, after having to wait for nine years.

And he said yes!

Speaking in the Lower House, Liberal MP Tim Wilson said: ‘The person I have to thank most is my partner, Ryan.

‘You’ve had to tolerate more than most, because you’ve had to put up with me. Trust me.

‘This debate has been the soundtrack to our relationship. We both know this issue isn’t the reason we got involved in politics. Give us tax reform any day!

‘But in my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands, and that they are the answer of the questions we cannot ask.

‘So there’s only one thing left to do.’

Wilson’s voice then cracked with emotion as he asked: ‘Ryan Patrick Bolger – will you marry me?’

Bolger, beaming from ear to ear, replied: ‘Yes.’

As the house erupted in applause, deputy speaker of the house Rob Mitchell congratulated the couple.

‘We should let Hansard note to record that was a “yes”, a resounding “yes”,’ Mitchell said.

Later, the House of Representatives confirmed that according to Hansard records, Wilson was the first person to ever propose on the floor of the house.

Wilson has been engaged to Bolger, a school teacher, for nine years – but after a landmark vote in favour of same-sex marriage last month, he reaffirmed his proposal.

The same-sex marriage bill is now being debated in the Lower House of Parliament. The debate is expected to conclude later this week, and to pass easily.

The MP also described people’s reactions when he first told them about the relationship years ago.

‘Always with an eye to the future, the Member for Kooyong [Josh Frydenberg] and his wife Amy sent flowers,’ Wilson said. ‘But when we told others, many simply didn’t know how to react.’

He said that some people didn’t reply to his text, while others tried to change the subject. One person even replied asking him: ‘Why bother?’

‘For a while, Ryan kept pushing for an engagement party, but the truth was I kept delaying it – perhaps wrongly,’ he said. ‘Because the strong message I took from so many people’s silence was that no one would come.’

We hope Wilson and Bolger will now throw an absolutely massive party to celebrate in style.
