We might all know and love the movie adaptation of Mamma Mia – but according to Dawn French, it could all have been so different.
Because the comedian has revealed that she was up for a part in the big screen version of the hit Abba musical – only to fall at the final hurdle.
So what happened? Well it all came down to her singing, apparently.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show Dawn explained: ‘I was asked to read for the part and was told it was pretty much mine.
‘I just had to do a musical audition but it was definitely in the bag. Everyone at the audition was lovely and chatty with me until I sang.’
And it was there that it didn’t end well, as she recalled: ‘I was so nervous that I couldn’t sing at all – it was terrible and as I left the room, all those people that had been so lovely to me were just staring at the table and no one said a word.
‘By the time I got downstairs my agent had texted to say, “This just isn’t going to work love!”.’Dawn is due to return to screens over the festive season as she reunites with her comedy partner Jennifer Saunders for 300 Years Of French And Saunders – revealing over 35,000 people applied for tickets to see the show, which airs on Christmas Day.‘There is life in the old girls yet!’ she joked as she addressed just how many fans wanted to come along and watch.The Graham Norton Show airs on Friday night on BBC One at 10.35pm.
