At the star-studded Los Angeles premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there were AT-ATs and Stormtroopers, screaming fans and photographers, and a whole lot of recognizable movie stars . . . plus a few faces right on the verge of being globally famous. Kelly Marie Tran, who plays resistance fighter Rose Tico in the movie, has her first major film role in the future blockbuster, and took over Disney’s Instagram to give a first-hand account of the madness.

It was on other social media accounts, though, that Tran emerged as the breakout star of the evening. A video of Tran hugging co-star Daisy Ridley—herself an unknown actor this time two years ago, before The Force Awakens made her and Rey instant icons—spread quickly:

There was no lack of spectacle even for those who didn‘t get to see Ridley and Tran up close. The premiere was guarded by two larger-than-life AT-M6 walkers — the supersized descendants of the AT-ATs from The Empire Strikes Back.

On the red carpet, Thom Yorke of Radiohead found the droid he was looking for.

Though formal reviews are under embargo, the movie is building up overwhelmingly positive buzz, with tweets calling it “ballsy,” a “major step forward,” and “beautifully human, populist, funny, and surprising.” It even got praise from a few fellow directors, one of whom (at least) is actually in the movie, though you might not spot him at first.

Producer Ram Bergman told Variety that viewers should expect a very different sort of Star Wars movie. “It’s very complex and very intimate and very emotional,” he said. “There’s a lot of movie…. It’s one of those movies, you’re going to say, I need to digest it, and I want to go see it again because there’s just a lot of it. I think the movie is dense. It’s complex, but it’s a fun ride. It truly is a Rian Johnson movie.”
