The announcement that Big Little Lies is coming back for another season has sparked outrage with its competitors after the HBO series had already been placed into the Limited Series category for the upcoming awards season.
Come on Big Little Lies, make up your mind!
The series was placed into the Best Limited Series or Motion Picture category for the Golden Globes, and the Television Award for Best Movie/Miniseries for this year’s Critic’s Choice Awards.
But HBO waited until after the categories were finalised before announcing that it’s coming back for another series, meaning the Producers Guild of America were forced to move the show into the episodic drama categories and restart the voting.
HBO announced on Friday that it would be bringing back the hit show for a second season that will feature the same cast in a continuing storyline. The series had already won eight Emmys in September in its limited series categories.
So basically, Big Little Lies told us some big little lies.
And according to The Hollywood Reporter, its competitors are fuming about the fact they waited until after voting had closed for the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards to make the announcement.
The Producers Guild of America addressed the controversy on Friday 8 December with a letter to members, saying it would ‘re-set the voting’ for its television nomination ballot.
‘The most equitable course of action is to adjust the ballots,’ the PGA said. ‘Placing Big Little Lies in the Episodic Drama category for which it now is qualified – and re-start the voting afresh.’
