The Twins signed right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda to a two-year, $10 million contract Wednesday. The 28-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery in July, a procedure that typically requires at least a full year’s worth of rehab, and is unlikely to play in 2018.

His contract reflects that timetable. Pineda is due just $2 million in 2018, and $8 million in 2019. A native of the Dominican Republic, Pineda has played five seasons in the majors. He made the All-Star Game as a rookie with the Seattle Mariners, registering a 3.74 ERA and a 1.099 WHIP.

Shoulder issues caused Pineda to miss the 2012 and 2013 seasons after being traded to the New York Yankees. But he bounced back, making 89 appearances in four seasons with the Yankees, finishing with a 4.16 ERA and 1.220 WHIP.

But while looking ahead to 2019 may not be enough to sate Twins fans, there could be more moves on the way. The Twins remain among the top suitors for free-agent ace Yu Darvish.
