Jack Wilshere blamed himself for Arsenal coming away with only 0-0 draw at West Ham after missing a golden chance in the second-half of the clash.

The 25-year-old midfielder was making his first start for Arsenal in the Premier League since May 2016 and was among the Gunners’ standout players in Aaron Ramsey’s absence at the London Stadium.

Arsene Wenger was pleased with Wilshere’s performance against David Moyes’ men but the England star believes he should have secured the victory for Arsenal in the 70th minute.

Asked about his display at West Ham, Wilshere said: ‘I felt good. I played a few games this year, but not in the Premier League obviously. I’ve played in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup.

‘I’m fit and happy to get my opportunity tonight. I thought I did alright – maybe there’s a little bit more to come but I’m happy.

Wilshere blazed a shot over the bar from close-range with 20 minutes remaining and believes he should have capitalised on the opportunity.

‘I haven’t seen it back. It happened really quick and it was on my weaker right foot but I should have done better,’ he said.

I should have hit the target.

‘It sat up a little bit but I should have hit the target and probably won us the game.’

"If we played on Saturday and West Ham on Sunday, maybe we could have found a little advantage."

On Wilshere’s performance, Wenger told BT Sport: ‘Overall it was a positive performance. Especially in first-half.

‘He showed good acceleration, he got fouled a few times and contributed very well.

‘He also defender well, which is very important in this position.
