Neither stormtrooper-turned-hero Finn nor the fearsome Captain Phasma ever shrink away from danger in the Star Wars films—but the actors who play them, John Boyega and Gwendoline Christie, are perhaps made of less stern stuff.

Vanity Fair challenged the two stars to stick their hands into a box and, without looking, touch whatever happened to be inside. Sometimes that thing was innocuous, like a container of sand or a cute little BB-8 toy; other times, it was a lizard or a snake. Needless to say, the latter two did not go over well with Boyega or Christie—but their exaggerated terror is absolutely delightful to watch, particularly when one knows what’s in the box but the other does not. Come for Christie screeching “I know it’s benign, John, but it’s *freaking me out!” while reaching for a slithery creature; stay for a distressed Boyega shrieking “what are you?!” at the contents of the box before discovering, thankfully, that it merely contains a fluffy puppy who’s a dead ringer for Chewbacca. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters December 15.
