A spokesperson said: ‘As ever, he remains grateful to his physicians for their excellent care, and his friends and supporters for their encouragement and good wishes. Senator McCain looks forward to returning to work as soon as possible.’

He is expected to return to Washington in January.

There are two types of glioblastoma: primary and secondary. McCain has been diagnosed with the former.

But primary is the more aggressive type. It starts out as a grade four tumor, whereas secondary is a grade two or three that grows.

The chances of having glioblastoma increase with age. One in five tumors that start in the brain are classed as a glioblastoma.

Symptoms include persistent headaches, seizures, vomiting and blurred or double vision.

McCain has still managed to carry out his duties while suffering from the illness.

Earlier this year, he shocked Republicans by casting a ‘no’ in the deciding vote for Donald Trump’s new healthcare bill.

At the time, he said he could not support the repeal and replace for Obamacare.

McCain and Trump continue to lock horns over it. The healthcare bill has been put to one side as the administration rushes to push through the new tax bill before the year ends.
