Woolly mammoths have been resurrected (kind of).

Residents of Yakutsk, Russia, awoke to find the extinct beasts roaming around their city.

Hundreds of tarantulas perished in a house fire apparently started by the electric blanket their owner put over their enclosures.Hundreds of tarantulas roast to death in devastating house fire

But it turned out scientists had not actually managed to bring the species back and the ‘animals’ were just sculptures made from snow and ice.

The adult and calf replicas were created by talented local artist Oleg Savvinov and his son Ayaal.

‘We used pressed wet snow to create them,’ said Ayaal.

‘It was quite a demanding job physically.

‘To make sculptures look realistic we had to use a lot of water to make sure the snow was wet.’

And the only reason their sculptures were able to stay up for so long was because Yakutsk is the world’s coldest city, with recent temperatures as low as minus 42C.

Scientists are currently trying clone the woolly mammoths using DNA from remains and then resurrect the species via an elephant but it is estimated it will take at least another five years.
